I cringe when I hear people talk about a PSD's weight as if they are bragging.   There is no problem having a large dog in law enforcment but having an overweight dog is detrimental to the dogs health and will reduce the dogs abilty to work each day and reduce the number of years the dog may work. 
During a recent training day I had commented to one of my handlers that his dog appeared a bit over weight and he should try to take some of the pounds off.  We talked about ways to reduce the weight, reduce the food intake, more activity, change the food to weight management food.  All good ideas and will work.  I left that day thinking we had made progress with this handler and hoped to see improvement in a few weeks.

A week later this is the email that I received from the handler.

Hey Andy,

Just wanted to let you know, I have been working with Hoover on his weight issues. At first, I cut his food back a little. I went from 4 cups a day to 3.5 cups. When I did this, he started complaining….getting antsy for food earlier than usual, barking before dinner time, etc. So to knock him into place, I started verbally berating him. Calling him fat, asking him why he was out of breath when he came up the stairs, making fun of him in general. This wasn’t really working, so I went to my Dr. Foster’s and Smith’s catalog and cut out a bunch of pictures of skinny model dogs. I glued these to the inside of his kennel so he could see what a healthy fit dog looked like. Well, I think this was too much, because after I fed him this morning, I noticed that he went straight upstairs to one of my bathrooms. I followed him up there and caught him with one of my tooth brushes. He was gagging himself in attempt to make himself puke. I think I made Hoover bulimic. Do you know how to correct this?

Our guys love to joke, Training needs to be fun as well as constructive.
