Where does control start?

If you keep your dog in a kennel at home or just loose in the yard, does he/she get really excited when you go to let them out?  In most case the dog knows from conditioning by us that when we come to the kennel gate that means they are about to be set free.  Like most dogs they probably jump around and try to force their way out of the first crack in the gate.

Believe it or not there is a wrong way to get your dog out of the yard, kennel or even the house.  If you allow this kind of out of control behavior then it is my opinion you are doing it the wrong way.

I believe that control starts right here and as handlers you should make sure the dog is under control before you allow them out of the kennel.  Once the dog is out the control should continue until you tell the dog he is free to run about and find the perfect bush.

It is my opinion that the control we all are looking for starts right here and with everything we do.  Its not just getting the dog out of the backyard, but it is getting the dog out of the car, truck, house, and even the crate.  The control must be present at all times until you allow the dog to be free.

When you take your police service dog for a walk, does he walk along side or does he pull ahead of you?  If the dog walks along side of you then he is submitting to your control, but if he is out ahead of you then this is a classic sign of a dog who has not fully submitted to your authority.

Its just my opinion, but control starts at the gate!
