Touring the Hungarian National Police Dog Handlers’ School

Early in 2009 I had the opportunity to visit Hungary and observe how Hungarians train and deploy police service dogs. My gracious hosts — Csaba Ternyak and translator Monika Szatmari — showed me around their country and also arranged for a tour of the National Police Dog Handlers’ School. Before I share those experiences, however, I’ll tell you a little about Hungary itself.

History of the Republic

The Republic of Hungary is a land-locked country in central Europe. It is bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia.

The Netherlands’ National Police Agency

The Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (KNPV), translated as the Royal Netherlands Police Dog Association, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007, making it one of the oldest police working dog associations in the world. Many Dutch police agencies have experienced the use of police dogs during those years. Today, every police department in the Netherlands has its own K-9 unit of patrol dogs, and some have dogs trained in special disciplines. Alongside the K-9 units of those regional police departments exists a special K-9 unit. In the small town of Nunspeet, hidden in the forests in central Holland, the K-9 Unit of the Korps landelijke politiediensten (KLPD) or Netherlands’ National Police Agency trains all Dutch special-discipline police dogs and their handlers.
